Collaborating for a Sustainable Future: The N7 Conference and Food Security

One thing is for sure: today’s world is increasingly uncertain.

💡 When we look to the future of food, two megatrends in uncertainty come crashing together: 1) evolving geopolitical tensions and 2) climate change.

In the face of these uncertainties, how can we ensure that everyone in the world has access to enough affordable, sustainable, nutritious food?

That question was the focus of March’s N7 Conference on Agriculture, Water, and Food Security. It was one of a series of conferences associated with the Negev Forum, which builds on the Abraham Accords to improve relations between Israel and several Arab and Muslim countries around key issues.

At this event, my colleagues at the Atlantic Council hosted a select group of leaders and subject-matter experts from the private sector, academia, and government from the N7 nations and other countries. Their goal? Identify opportunities for collaboration around food security in the Middle East.

💡 Food security itself relies on the availability and conservation of water and energy, and is linked to food prices, food waste—and, of course, technology.

At this event, participants innovated on projects that would tackle these aspects—while expanding and deepening cross-border relationships in a geopolitically fraught region that is on the leading edge of climate change’s impacts.
Unfortunately I couldn’t join this event in person, but I’m excited to see the relationships and projects that come out of it!

💡 Food security is one of those issues that we can all agree on. It emphasizes the essential humanity of people everywhere, regardless of country or culture.

The challenges faced by the N7 nations will increasingly confront people around the world as temperatures rise. That’s why conversations like this one are imperative for the days to come.

At the end of the day, hope is all about people—and how they build a better future, together.
