“We have only one life to live and we want to spend it enriching our own country with the plants of the world which produce good things to eat and to look at.”
–David Fairchild

Dr. Tiffany Vora recommends the book The Food Explorer by Daniel Stone.

A huge number of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and other plants surround us in our daily lives thanks to a small group of men who roamed the globe in the late 19th and early 20th century. They sought out hardy, beautiful, and delicious plants—and the knowledge of growing them that could stretch back thousands of years.

This book focuses on David Fairchild and his fellow “food explorers” who laid the foundation for modern agriculture. For page after page, I was truly astonished at their adventures as they navigated deserts, jungles, and government bureaucracies. It’s hard to imagine similar efforts today- for many very good reasons!

I definitely recommend picking up a copy of The Food Explorer. And if you don’t have time for the whole book, check out this interview with the author on one of my favorite podcasts, Gastropod.
