Dr. Tiffany Vora recommends the book Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams by Matthew Walker, PhD.

What healthy habits are you creating today?

Better sleep hygiene can make a profound difference across the board, from your mood to your ability to learn—likely even to your longevity!

A few weeks ago I decided to explore the science of sleep through an accessible, thought-provoking book, Why We Sleep, by Dr. Matthew Walker. I learned a lot … and I’m a biologist!

It turns out that there are many, many links between sleep and creativity, innovation, collaboration, ethical behavior, risk assessment, and how we treat people (and lead). As business leaders, innovators, and people who care about others, sleep should be important to us. I particularly enjoyed learning about the signals that support the brain as it moves through the various stages of sleep—and how quality sleep in each of those stages improves our health and performance.

This book and the science it reported motivated me to overhaul my personal sleep environment and routines. I’ve been caffeine-free for more than a decade, so I’ve increased my daily exercise and decreased my alcohol intake (good ideas anyway!). I’ve also grabbed some blue light-filtering glasses and a yellow-light bedside lamp for my bedroom. I’ve also got my eyes open for ways to support healthy sleep as I start traveling again.

Getting more sleep that’s higher quality seems like low-hanging fruit, doesn’t it? But like moderate exercise and mindful eating, improving our sleep can cost us very little in terms of money and effort but deliver big impacts on our #health. And it’s hard to imagine how better sleep would make life worse!

What do you do to get a good night’s rest?
