Some thoughts on books and re-imagining futures in celebration of #WorldLiteracyDay.

On World Literacy Day, we have a moment to pause and celebrate one of the most fundamental forces for change: the power of words and ideas. Literacy is more than just the ability to read and write—it's the foundation for solving the world’s toughest problems. By embracing literacy, we unlock the capacity to imagine, create, and innovate toward a better future for all.

More Than Reading: Literacy as a Force for Change

Reading is not simply about acquiring information; it's a mental workout that strengthens critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Engaging with book-length works, whether digital or in print, helps our brains delve deeper into meaningful ideas, sustaining our attention in a way that scrolling through bite-sized content cannot. It's this sustained engagement that sharpens our ability to think critically and come up with new solutions to complex challenges.

And honestly, in today’s frenetic world, couldn’t we all use a bit more time to think and imagine? Especially our young children and teens?

Storytelling: The Human Connection Through Books

I believe that storytelling is one of the most powerful—indeed essential—strategies possessed by humans. It fosters connection, empathy, and collaboration. From ancient myths to modern novels, stories empower us to step into the lives of others, experiencing their joys, struggles, and perspectives. Storytelling also helps us communicate complex ideas, build shared visions, and inspire collective action. Note that reading is just one of the gateways to storytelling that shapes how we interact with one another and navigate the world. But it’s a crucial tool that our ancestors refined over thousands of years.

Literacy is fundamental to our ability to work together and to solve challenges as a community.

The Evolution of Reading Formats

Yes, reading is evolving. Today, we have access to an incredible variety of formats—whether it’s the crisp smell of a freshly printed book, the convenience of an e-book, or the immersive experience of audiobooks. And with emerging technologies, we can imagine new ways of experiencing stories and ideas. I’m not quite sure what a  “virtual reality book” would look like, or “social reading”, but I’m stoked to find out!

Reading, Writing, and Lifelong Learning

Dr. Tiffany Vora reading The Catalyst: How to Change Anyone's Mind, by Jonah Berger | Book review available on Tiffany's YouTube channel.

At its core, reading is about thinking. So is writing—the flip side of literacy! Reading and writing both challenge us to question, to reflect, to empathize, and to grow. They’re pathways to lifelong learning, fostering curiosity and enabling us to adapt to a rapidly changing world. By continuously learning, we become better equipped to tackle global issues with the empathy and insight needed to create lasting change.

Let’s celebrate the power of words and stories, whether they’re ours or others. Because reading is more than just a pastime. It’s a tool for shaping a smarter, more compassionate, and sustainable future. So, pick up a book, dive into an audiobook, or scroll through an e-book—and let’s continue the journey of lifelong learning, together.
