Space, Innovation, & Collaboration: Key Insights from the Space Futures Workshop

Dr. Tiffany Vora at the 2024 Space Futures & Governance Workshop

I had the chance to join the 2024 Space Futures & Governance Workshop, hosted by the amazing folks at Foresight Institute and Open Lunar Foundation. Here’s the headline:

There are massive opportunities on the horizon for space exploration, sustainability, and growth of a new economy. Which means that there’s a place for you in the space community!

A Gathering of Global Experts

Over two days, I joined an international group of experts across domains relevant to our future off Earth. We kicked things off with lightning talks about science and technology, with perspectives from across innovation and market sectors. I shared a brief look at the work we’ve done at Explore Mars about the promise of synthetic biology for space. From there, we went deep into sustainability, heritage, access, governance, and opportunity.

The morning of Day 2 was a fast-paced dive into opportunities and challenges on the Moon. From there we tackled thorny (but fascinating) issues of economics, AI, governance, and the workforce.

Key Takeaways from the Workshop

Here are some great reminders from this event:

  • Space is not just about rockets!

  • As various technologies continue to accelerate, we can simultaneously expect opportunities to expand and challenges to multiply.

  • There is so much innovation happening, and not just in tech. I was astounded by the creativity on display just in this small event—as well as the excitement to collaborate and to build exciting things, together.

  • People, not technology, are going to decide what kind of future humanity experiences off Earth. Which means if you’re interested in a space future that’s peaceful, prosperous, sustainable, and awe-inspiring, now is the time to lean in!

Finding Your Tribe in the Space Community

I can’t wait to reconnect with the people and organizations that I met at this workshop. This is a beautiful example of finding your tribe: folks who share your vision and your North Star, but have their own ideas and priorities about how to get from here to there.

It’s going to take all of us to build positive futures, no matter where people call home. I’m thrilled to be part of this journey!
