Book Recommendation: Scale by Geoffrey West

Dr. Tiffany Vora recommends Scale by Geoffrey West

Here’s a mouthful of a title for you: Scale: The Universal Laws of Growth, Innovation, Sustainability, and the Pace of Life in Organisms, Cities, Economies, and Companies (2017). It’s a big promise from a book filled with big ideas. The author, Dr. Geoffrey West, is a theoretical physicist renowned for his work in complexity science. Here, he guides readers through an exploration of the hidden principles that underlie the growth and dynamics of living organisms, cities, and companies. By bridging the gap between biology, urban studies, and business, this book unearths surprising connections that may end up being helpful in thinking about the future.

West’s central thesis revolves around the concept of scaling laws: mathematical relationships that describe how the properties of a system change as the system itself changes in size. Despite the apparent diversity of life forms and human institutions, there are underlying principles that arise over and over. Whether it’s the metabolism of a mouse versus an elephant or the infrastructure of a small town versus a sprawling metropolis, West showcases how seeking out shared principles can reveal important insights about where we’ve been—and where we might be heading.

Extracting Business Insights from Nature

It should come as no surprise that I picked up Scale to grow my insights into the parallels between the natural world and human-made systems. Although this book has a strong quantitative flavor (particularly in the early chapters, as we’re reminded of key mathematics), West’s insights offer practical implications for business leaders and innovators.

West delves into the idea of "superlinear" scaling, where certain metrics—such as innovation and wealth creation—increase faster than size. That’s in contrast to the “sublinear” scaling that underlies economies of scale. How do we balance creativity and efficiency? While West offers no easy answers, he believes that understanding these patterns allows for more informed decisions about scaling operations, optimizing resources, and anticipating challenges.

Thinking About the Future

In Scale, West urges us to think critically about the future, especially in the context of sustainability and the limits of growth. Are we truly in an era of limitless unchecked expansion—or should we be looking to biological and ecological examples to motivate sustainable practices and long-term planning?

Today, rapid growth and innovation are often seen as the most desirable, ultimate end goals. West’s work provides a sobering perspective on natural constraints. He advocates for a balance between growth and sustainability, encouraging leaders to adopt practices that not only drive success but also ensure the longevity and health of their organizations and the environments in which they operate. Most of all, he calls for more data-driven investigations of our increasingly dynamic and complex world.

A Holistic Approach to Leadership

West has built his career turning a theoretical physicist’s eye on various complex systems, reaching for elegant (and preferably simple) mathematics that can make sense of complicated problems. This interdisciplinary approach is a beautiful example of the importance of holistic thinking. Insights from one domain can be valuable in others.

We don’t all need to be physicists or adept mathematicians. But as leaders we should foster a mindset of drawing useful insights from anywhere they’re offered. Scale can help with that—as long as you’re willing to commit some brain power. It’s worth the effort.

In conclusion, Scale is not just a book about scientific principles; it’s a tool for future thinking. By learning from the natural world, we can extract valuable lessons that inform sustainable and innovative practices in business and beyond. I know that I’ve got quite a few dogeared and bookmarked pages to return to!
